Solo Camping in Baja Mexico
Let's go solo camping in Baja, Mexico. I'm driving to an unpopulated beach in Baja Sur to camp alone and surf some new waves this weekend. I'm traveling in my 4x4 truck with a rooftop tent, and I've packed my solo overlanding gear (1st aid, tools, water) just in case we find ourselves in a situation.

I'm testing the off-road capability of my DIY truck camper while on a solo camping trip in Los Padres National Forest, California. Very glad to see you again. Some how, I lost you!! Love the new Rig!!
$2,500 for a running and apparently straight Toyota pickup??? Where and when did you buy that truck, and what year is it? I think you got a DEAL on that purchase. Congratz on such a great build. I'm designing my own camping trailer/toy hauler and want it to be partially collapsible, to reduce the wind drag while towing. I'd love to have your input on my project, if you don't mind sharing your experience and knowledge. My biggest challenge is making it rigid enough, since it will only have three sides with a fold down ramp in the back to load and unload the toys.
i think it's so nice that y'all chose to call this the "traveling together journal"
Amie if you see this! You can just move your razor up and down (like in say 2 inch swaths) as you shave and it'll clear itself of hair without you needing to rinse it, counter to everything we were taught! I learned this on TikTok and maybe you have since too. :) I just did this to shave my super hairy armpits a few days ago and it took seconds...and also that way I guess no (less?) risk of sketchy electrocution because no need to rinse hair out of the blade.
I have a passport for my pup. Would you say that would satisfy the need Amie's talking about for an "international license" for Jagger?
It will probably work for every border we crossed on this trip except entering Belize and Panama. Those are strict about a health certificate within 10 days of arrival.
how were y'all tracking swells? is there an app you like?
I was using magic seaweed, but they have since been bought by surfline. I use a combo of windy and surfline now.
Do you have an idea of the R-rating for your walls? Pour foam vs XPS, i like the simplicity of the pour foam.
My walls have a estimated r value of 4.5. Thats 5/8" of 2lbs pour foam and 3/8" of plywood. The pour foam is rated at 6.5 R for 1"
wow that puppy with that log! lolol 💗

that poor puppy! what a good boy!
wow that ferry must be huge
messed up that renogy makes you send back their dysfunctional product before replacing it when you need something to keep you going. hope they treat ppl better today
whoa so what was the budget when a $24 hotel was the most expensive ever?
$50/day. That was on average and included everything (food, accommodation, fuel, auto repairs, border crossings, activities, car insurance, medical expenses, ect.) We were a few dollars under budget at the end of a year $18,250
did they break up soon after this?
Nope. ❤️
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal ha i didn't think y'all were frequently checking this. great! hoping to drive with a dog from portland to costa rica soon and am appreciating your stuff
@@transcendcapitalism Have a great trip!
You oicked the perfect donor vehicle in my opinion , the 1st gen tundra/sequoias are the most reliable rigs on the road , with maybe the 100 series land cruiser neck and neck . The 1st gens arent the best at towing or offroading , but very capable at everything . I suggest seat jackers for your driver seat ,makes it more comfortable.
This is a T100. I definitely considered the 1st gen tundra. They are basically the same size. The tundra obviously has more power/torque and comfort, which would be nice. I went with the T100 because I could get one with 4x4, manual transmission, and manual transfer case, it gets slightly better fuel efficiency, curb weight is lower, payload capacity is higher, and since I am taking it abroad I like that it shares a lot of parts with the Hilux and a few other Toyotas that were offered outside the USA. The 1st gen Tundras have a well deserved reputation as a reliable vehicle and I suspect it may run correctly more reliably since the 5vzfe engine is so susceptible to vacuum leaks, but I'd argue the T100 is less likely to leave me stranded with its manual gearboxes, parallelogram steering, no serpentine belt, front suspension compresses balljoints, and a fully boxed frame.
for the tail lights... i put DOT approved trailer tail lights on my jeep. no more breaking
Thanks I got some trailer lights to replace them and remounted them to safer and more visible location. ruclips.net/video/iqUpPH0yaV4/видео.htmlsi=B9cOFZ7oGD3umJFF&t=312
You did an amazing job with your DIY camper. It is beautiful and looks very comfortable. I would have made the entry door a tad taller but I can see with the expandable roof it might not be possible. Would you want a low-roof camper? Is having the ability to stand more important to you? Have you considered a portable power station instead of your current power setup? I think you could have more battery capacity if you used a solar generator at a lower upfront cost.
Having the ability to stand is nice and I can sleep in the cabover too. If the camper didn't pop-up I wouldn't have enough room to sleep in the cabover or use the camper very effectively at all. I built a camper in the past that had a low roof but it was really just a bed and storage space. I did consider a solar generator. My current system is more efficient, has a lower upfront cost and can be serviced or modified as needed.
Excellent video, just buy a Shotgun mic please
Baja is such an incredible place. We spent a couple of weeks earlier this year camping mostly along the gulf side. Watching footage of your weekend with Lucky makes us want to go back ahora!
It's special for sure
So nice!
What month of the year was this
December
How long did it take to remove the camper and put the original truck bed back on the T100? From the videos, it looked like a permanet installation.
This is a different truck. This is my daily driver The camper can be removed. It's only 6 bolts, but lifting it off high enough to drive out from under it is a slow sketchy process without the proper tools.
Matt, your use of different cameras and editing is just great. Lucky is gonna be a new star for your team!
Thanks Mike
I must say, you’re very talented.

I understand if you don't want to give your exact location, but roughly how far down Baja are you? And what is/was the weather like? Nice surfing!
I was about halfway down Baja California Sur. Weather is nice on the Pacific coast this time of year for the most part. It was still a bit extra humid from the hurricane that had passed by SW of us, but not bad
Nice!! I know it’s been years, but can you tell me if you used poly or epoxy resin? Thanks!!
epoxy
That's a great rig. Lots of creative solutions. Congrats. Thanks for sharing it with us!
How much does the 18 inches over your cab affect your gas mileage and handling?
Combined gas mileage went from 19 with the stock truck empty to 15 with the loaded camper. I don't know how much of that change is from the poor aerodynamics and how much is the added weight. I'm not sure I notice much difference in handling from the height. She didn't exactly have impressive handling to begin with and I contribute the reduced handling primarily to the increased weight. It feels very similar to driving the same truck with the bed fully loaded.
Amazing video. We would like to show this project on our channel with your permission. We will add your link and your name will also be mentioned in the video. Let us know what you think

What happened to your home built camper on the blue truck?
It's stored in California. I put together this setup so I could haul a bunch of stuff down to our new home in Baja. I'll be hitching a ride up to the states to get my camper and bring it down next month. Many more adventures to come with the camper 👍
Good life brother. You travel and the wife works. Good gig if you can arrange it. Another informative video. Keep up the great work and d keep on keepin’ on.

Guess I’m going to have to add Belize to my bucket list.
Okay… That’s nice, I like that..👍🏾
Good job! So, you didn’t want to spend 50k on a camper…
I definitely didn't want to spend 50k on a camper that didn't even fit my needs 😂
For sure! We just bought a composite camper shell from a BC company 17500$ Canadian, gonna build it out to our needs. So I appreciate the work all u RUclipsrs put in recording & posting the work you’ve done! Cheers!
@@Mark-id7fq I watched a ton of RUclips videos to help me through my camper project too. A great source of info and creativity that you get to mash together and make your own. Have fun building and using your project!
amazing craftsmanship!
how does it do in the baja wind?
I've only gone camping when the weather looked nice, so I haven't had more than 20 knots of wind with the tent up. It is nice to be up off the ground when the wind gets up around 20 and the sand starts blown around a bit.
Does it stay dry?
I've only experienced about an hour of light rain while camping with this tent. It stayed dry during that brief shower. The tent has a 5000mm waterproof rating, so it should stay pretty dry. Of course if you are shopping for a shelter to use in regular heavy rain I would steer away from tents in general.
@@TheTravelingTogetherJournal I'll just add to this, this particular RTT doesn't look great for areas with more rain, the tent has no obvious ways to allow airflow while raining but the main issue is no way to enter and exit the tent while staying out of the rain.
@@sharpsticksnz4112 good point. The rear of the tent can be used as an entry point if you have room to set up the ladder over the rear of your vehicle. That would provide some decent protection from rain, but not everyone will be able to do that. The only solution to this I've seen on other tents is to have some sort of vestibule/ overhanging flap above the doors, but this adds to the setup/breakdown process so there is a little tradeoff there.
I would fear the whole camper might go airborne at speed. It seems to me it needs a security strap or two down to the truck frame or body while traveling.
The camper shell is bolted to the bed rail. I've done a couple thousand miles on the highway and a couple hundred miles off-pavement without issue, but a support down to the frame would be a good idea to prevent bed spreading if I decide to keep the tent on the truck.
You had a blow out in your shorts matt?🤣
wardrobe malfunction 😳
Nice tent
Could you store the ladder in the tent or is it too thick?
I think I could, but it would definitely need to squish into the matress pretty tight. And it'd be a little awkward getting it back out of the tent from the ground when I am trying to set the tent up. If the truck was shorter or I was taller it would be a good solution
with out the ladder getting into the tent could be a Olympic event
@@groundhog1903 🤣
